Calling all Truebies! Find out what went down when we met with True Blood’s Joe Manganiello, who plays Alcide in the hit HBO show. Everybody’s favourite werewolf dished the goss on what he thinks of the future between Sookie and Alcide and what he does with all the naked pictures of himself that he receives from fans.
What do you currently have on your workout music playlist?
I’m really lucky that a good friend of mine DJ Z-Trip mixes playlists for me as he’s a world class DJ and started the whole mash up movement. But really as I have to train so much to keep in shape, anything with an awesome beat will do.
What book are you currently reading?
The most recent book I’ve read was a book called irredeemable which a friend had recommended me which is about what if Superman decided to give up or what if Superman went dark and became the world’s worst super villain. So it’s this psychological demise of superman. It could happen as he gets his heart broken and is betrayed and just snaps which is kind of cool.
Do you think that there is a future with Sookie and Alcide?
It’s funny, it’s the question that everyone is dying to know. I hope so, I really do. That being said I haven’t seen what’s in store for next season but I will say that the women in Alcide’s life haven’t been great for him and I think that as a romantic at heart Alcide needs a good woman to settle down with.
We were covering comic-con last weekend and the attention that the True Blood and the panel receive is amazing, did you come across any Australian fans?
The Aussie fans are everywhere and are so passionate, I love it!
What is the strangest thing a fan has ever given you?
People are just so appreciative. I don’t think that anyone has giving me anything weird, I mean people have said strange things to me. I love it though, I’ve had fans make necklaces for me with wolves teeth on them, bracelets with little wolf faces built in and last night I got a coca-cola can which a fan had made with Alcide on the side which was cool. I’ve certainly gotten some strange fan art that fans have made of me naked or doing crazy things while naked that they’ve drawn… I have a special draw for all of those.
Is there another role outside of True Blood that you would love to play?
Definitely, the one people always ask me is batman now that they have announced another batman film. Fans are always tweeting me about it. The trick of it is I have to manage my expectations, because my schedule from true blood has held me back from playing every single movie superhero. Superman was the prime example. I couldn’t do that, I couldn’t do Hercules, I had to be pulled out of the cast of Draft Day. I had a call about Captain America 2, a call about Thor 2, a call about Iron Man 3, I mean the list goes on. Unfortunately I can’t do them all, but I’m so grateful for True Blood and am concentrating on that for now and once the series is over I’m sure there is something out there for me.
Are you into comic books?
When I was growing up I was a big comic junkie and was a real comic nerd.
If you could play another character on True Blood who would it be?
I would have liked to have played Godric. That would have been interesting, playing a several thousand year old vampire who is tired. I think there is something incredibly tragic and interesting about him. He’s tired of it and he’s tired of being what he was and I think that it’s interesting that kind of romantic immortal thing wares off and then you’re just left looking in the mirror at a monster and it would be interesting to play that character and explore that.
Is there any part of playing a werewolf that you dislike?
Just the fact that the story line has kept me away from the series regulars, that’s been tough. Because sometimes there’s a tendency to feel like you’re on a different show than everybody else and a lot of the actors on the show have become my friends and family and the toughest part is being the lone wolf on a vampire show.
Are there long periods of time when you don’t see the other actors?
Oh yeah, we do a table read for every episode which is roughly every three weeks but usually I don’t see anybody in between except for some of the werewolf actors.
In season 6, now that you have the power and we’ve seen a different side of Alcide, what everyone wants to know is will we see the old version of the lone wolf return?
The character wasn’t that one sided and what I mean by that is there were about 4 episodes worth of my scenes that got cut from my story line this year. They decided during episode 5 that they were going to change the story line and what that meant was all of the scenes I shot with Robert Patrick got cut because they were telling a different story. There was also some stuff with Emma that also got cut so you saw that Alcide was still the same big hearted, protective guy, it’s just that when he was interacting with the werewolves he had to be this other guy. It was tricky to me because I had tried to layer the performance a certain way and if you just pulled one half of the performance out, that’s what you’re left with. I’m in as much shock as the audience as that’s not the Alcide that I envisaged and plotted out. So the answer is that he’s still that guy but no one saw the scenes.
Will he go back to a certain way?
No. He’s evolving and maybe it’s hard for an audience to think that but that same audience that was complaining that Alcide was aggressive is the same audience that complained about Eric being a wussy in season 4. We did see an aggressive side of Alcide in last year’s sex scenes because they were very different to the Eric sex scenes with the snow flakes and the satin sheets looking like a bedding commercial.
What I think the audience is seeing right now is the equivalent of a chrysalis, he’s transforming into something that will be this new, bigger better version of Alcide and will see it by the end of the season.
